Slingers suffers 1st loss of Season as they dropped 59-62 to arch-rival Patriots

The Slingers took a plane and they left for their very first away game of the season. With heads held high, they looked to accomplish a task that they hadn’t been able to do last season – to grab a win at Ynares Arena in Manila, the home of the Philippines Patriots. With an improved line-up, the idea of an away win seemed feasible.

They fought hard. They stuck to the gameplan. But they just fell short of 3 points. Interesting, this loss is the team’s first after a flawless pre-season and first game.

It was an extremely low-scoring game with both teams playing stingy defense. The Slingers led in the first quarter 16-10. However, the Patriots fought back quickly in the second to outscore the Slingers 22-11 in the second quarter. They led the Slingers 32-27 at the half. In the third quarter, the score was close as the Patriots took a slim lead of 48-46 at the end of the period.

The game was down to the wire in the fourth quarter.

JJ Cabatu hit a crucial trey to put the Patriots on top 60-56. However, Al Vergara answered almost immediately with his own to bring the Slingers back within one at 60-59. But time was not on the Slingers side, as Patriots converted another basket to pull off a narrow win eventually.

Leo Avenido was the top scorer for the Slingers once again with 15 points. He also had 6 rebounds and 3 steals to go along. Kyle Jeffers only recorded 10 points despite a 16 rebounds effort from the Centre. The only local boy who was able to shine in the game was Tan Chin Hong who went 4/4 from the field for 8 points. Steven ‘Yakuza’ Khoo, who led the local pack in the previous game, was held to only 4 points throughout the entire game.

The Slingers look to bounce back in the next game against their causeway rivals – the Westport KL Dragons. Be sure to support your very own Slingers team in the next home game.

Philippines Patriots 62 : Fernandez 12, Billiones 11, Cabatu 11, Sta. Maria 7, Little 7, Llagas 6, Ybanez 4, Chito 2, Salangsang 2

This is a Slinger fan site, it would look more silly if the above reports says “one of the Patriots import was recuperating”. Their 3 tune up games win over visiting PBA teams gave them the wrong assurance. Better luck next time Slingers….

Next time if the Slingers really want to test their mettle, invite the Smart Gilas Developmental pool. Since, all Filipinos here in Singapore will be eager to watch that game, it will translate into gate attendance revenue. Plus the Slingers will know where their current skill level really stand. Win-win situation if you ask me
